s once a time when it was the ants pants in brewing a great cup of coffee but technology has seen the introduction of quick, automated machines which will spew out a cup of "Joe" in no time flat.
Why would you go to the trouble of using a coffee press when at the push of a button, a trnasformer type machine will virtually hand you a cup of coffee in the blink of an eye?
Why?
Because the coffee press is still a hard gadget to beat when it comes to producing great tasting coffee. You know, it's been around since the late 19th. century and has never really lost it's appeal among "true blue" coffee lovers. Aroma rich coffee is the name of the game for those of us who appreciate the great taste of the "black liquid stuff" and the coffee press rarely lets us down.
Understanding How A Coffee Press Works
The amazing aspect of a press is it's simplicity. There is nothing complicated about the workings of a coffee press. To be more accurate: A coffee press looks like a carafe, and it features a press, which is a piston-like rod, connected to a cylindrical-shaped filter.
The press passes through the center of the carafe and voila... great tasting coffee. Here is a crash course in operating a coffee press:
1. Grind your coffee beans
2. For best results, try giving them a coarse finish. The reason for this is because you want maintain the flavor as hot water is poured over them.
3. Place the ground beans in the filter and let the filter hang around in the middle of the carafe.
4. Next step is to boil fresh water and by lifting the handle, simply pour the the water and then it's time to commence the press. This is done by pressing the piston-style handle.
5. That's it. Simple. The hot water and the ground beans will combine to extract unwanted substances filtering out rich tasting coffee.
Disadvantages And Advantages
The obvious advantage using a coffee press is you will rarely be let down taste wise. Also, a press is virtually a self-contained unit so no extras such as paper filters are needed.
Those who don't regularly use a press may complain about sediment left in the cup while others will point out a coffee produced this way will not retain it's flavor as long as other methods. That's open to debate.
Bottom line is, a real coffee lover won't mind trying different methods of brewing a cup. The coffee press is a great alternative to have in the home to the now more conventional methods of brewing.
