In my childhood days you had a choice; percolated or instant and we just drank coffee because it helped "blow out the cobwebs" first thing in the morning or gave you that kick you needed in the middle afternoon to get through the rest of the day.

I am used to the new drip type coffeemakers ....so how long do I leave the coffee...percolate over the fire ??? I want to make a GOOD cup of coffee.

Put enough water in the pot to fill it to just below the basket. There is usually a mark on the outside (and inside) of the pot marking this level and indicating how many cups it will make.. Put the basket and stem into the pot and add one medium teaspoon of coffee per cup of water. I usually add just one additional spoonful "for the pot." (There are some people who add a pinch of salt or an egg shell to take some of the acidic flavor away. You might want to wait on this until you learn how to use the pot.) There should be a top to place on the basket to distribute the water as it percolates.
Place the pot on a hot fire and keep an eye on it as it heats. When the water is hot enough that it begins to boil inside the pot, as evidenced by the water bubbling up into the glass top on the lid. At this point, move the pot to the outside edge of the fire to allow the water to simmer and keep bubbling up into the glass. This slowly boiling water will pass up through the stem and out onto the basket lid. If you leave the pot on the hot fire, it will boil the water at a too rapid rate and it will cause the water (and coffee) to overflow through the pot's spout. Once you move the pot, Let it brew like this for just about seven minutes. That's the time I use. Take the pot off the fire and let the grounds settle a couple of minutes, then remove the basket (carefully, as it might be hot) and discard the grounds. Don't try to reuse them a second time! If you like your coffee stronger or weaker, adjust the time up or down accordingly a little at a time until it's just right.
Suggest you try a few pots at home first to try it and learn.

The Hamilton Beach Brew Station 12 Cup Coffee Maker is unique amongst coffee makers. This coffee maker has no carafe, instead the coffee is self contained within the unit and is released into your cup by pressing on a dispenser. A great idea it is, but Hamilton Beach needs to engineer this product as it failed ten days after we purchased one. Please continue reading for all the details.

Our Braun coffee maker served us well for over six years. Thousands of coffee potfuls later, it failed to work one morning and we knew it was time to shop for a new one. As we strolled the aisles of our local BJ's we realized that Braun was not a brand that they carried. Nevertheless our attention was drawn to a unique looking product, the Hamilton Beach Brew Station 12 Cup Coffee Maker, and we soon carried it off and brought it home.

What is so special about this particular product? No carafe! Yes, coffee brews within the main unit and then is released into your cup by pressing on a dispenser, much like the type you find at some coffee stores. The advantage is obvious: you can get coffee with one hand while not worrying that you will break the carafe. An excellent idea!

This particular model holds standard sized coffee filters and has an internal warming tray to keep the coffee warm. Indeed, we felt that the unit kept coffee hotter longer than most units we had owned in the past. For several days we enjoyed hot, fresh brewed coffee and we believed that we made a wise decision in purchasing the product.

Our interest in the product was short-lived, however. One of the oddest features about the unit was the double push of the on/brew button to get the unit started. Much like the double click of your computer's mouse to open a file, users must do the same thing to the round push button located on the front of the machine. No toggling on/off switch to deal with here! Unfortunately, one recent morning the switch did not work. Sure, the light came on, but coffee was not dispensed. My wife and I redid the process at least a dozen times before we realized that the machine was not going to work. The water was in the unit, the coffee was seated properly in the filter, and the light switch came on. Still, no coffee was brewing.

In summation, the Hamilton Beach Brew Station 12 Cup Coffee Maker is an excellent idea, but the button is a bad idea. It would be better to replace the switch with something that works the first time and everytime thereafter. Fortunately for us we were able to return the item to BJ's where we received a full cash refund. Hamilton Beach has a great idea, but their engineering leaves something to be desired.

Coffee is a common beverage that many people consider a daily staple. It helps to start their day or round out their night. Stainless Steel coffee pots?

Hi All, This is one for the coffee fanatics here. Do stainless steel coffee pots add a flavor to the coffee? I've used an SS vacuum coffee mug once or twice and found that it seems to add a tang to the coffee that's in it. The reason I'm asking is that I'm considering buying a Bodum French Press in either stainless or glass. Anybody got an opinion?

Whenever you buy a SS coffee brewer, it's recommended to make a waste brew. This will place a coating on the SS container to protect the flavor of the next batch. To clean the container, just rinse with warm water & wipe with a cloth or paper towel. I bought a SS Moka pot and the directions included with it actually told you to do this. It is even more important on aluminum models as they affect the flavor more than SS versions. Plus it protects the aluminum from corrosion.

Making a dead/waste brew is the only time I'll ever use preground coffee, if I have any around.

Every now and then you'll have to properly wash the pot. Just make a new waste batch to prime the pot after it's clean.

It's kind of like curing cast iron pots before you use them.

To make a perfect cup of coffee every time you need:

- A Drip coffee maker

- A Stainless steel or gold mesh coffee filter, brown unbleached paper if you are insistent on paper

- A stash of vinegar and baking soda for cleaning

- A good quality whole bean coffee bean not the 1.99 a pound kind

- 30 minutes of you time (start to finish)

If you want a perfect cup of coffee, instant is not going to be in your vocabulary. To make an absolute unadulterated cup of coffee you need a little time and a few essential ingredients.

First off, almost any drip coffee maker will work. The 19.99 one all the way to the 99.99 ones all do the same thing. They heat the water and siphon it over coffee grounds. As the water is soaked into the coffee, picking up the flavor it is then drained through a filter into a glass pot. Honestly the coffee pot is not what makes the cup of coffee. If what you are looking for is the best tasting cup of coffee for your money and time, here is how to do it yourself.

A clean glass coffee pot is what you need to start off with. To clean this well, you need to place about ¼ cup of baking soda into the glass pot and with your fingers add a few drops of water. Use your fingers to spread the baking soda all over the pot, up the sides and such. After you have used this as a mild abrasive, add 1 cup of vinegar. Swirl and swish allowing the baking soda and vinegar to bubble away. Next, use a clean cloth to wash the inside of the glass pot. Now, rinse well under hot water. When you think it has been thoroughly rinsed, give it one more good rinse. We are trying to make sure our pot is clean with no residues of soaps, coffee oils, or vinegar and baking soda. A clean pot will make a lot of difference. No more washing the pot once a week, or just running it under the water and calling it good.

Second step to a great cup of coffee is the filter you use. Most of us buy the cheap white 150 for 1.25 coffee filters. Why are they cheap? Because, they are not good. Not only are they paper, but they add chlorine and bleach, and starches to your coffee. How are you supposed to have a good cup of coffee if you add those things to it. I recommend a metal strainer. Gold mesh or stainless steel is good. These are a little more expensive, but are not disposable so you can reuse them for a good long time. Average cost for these run 12.99-19.99. Clean these the same as the coffee pot. Rinse well!

Third step to a great cup of coffee is using good filtered water. I am not saying you need to use bottled water. But getting a Brita filter and filtering your water before brewing will take the extra minerals and chlorine and any other extras often found in tap water. Since coffee is mainly water that is heated and flavored doesn't it make sense to use good quality clean water?

And of course the last step to a great cup of coffee is using a good whole bean coffee. No, coffee that is sitting on the shelf at Safeway will not do. You need to buy coffee beans from a good small company that buys their coffee in small batches, that are roasted daily or weekly. Only then can you be sure that the coffee you are getting is fresh. Choosing coffee this way runs about $12 a pound. But remember this is whole bean, you are getting a lot of coffee for the price. Grinding your own coffee bean at home is the best way to assure your very own perfect cup of coffee.

One more tip, do not reheat your brewed coffee, or leave it on for hours and hours. Brew only enough coffee that you will drink within the hour or so. Reheating and micro waving coffee just breaks the coffee down even faster. Yes, coffee does break down. When this happens you end up with a strong, sour taste. Not the perfect cup if you ask me. How do you brew just a few cups of coffee at a time? For every 6 ounces of water you add to your pot, add only 2 tablespoons of fresh ground coffee beans to the filter. When putting the ground coffee beans into the filter make sure it is level and spread evenly across the bottom of the filter. This assures even brewing. You now have no excuse to not enjoy your own perfect cup of coffee.

I have asthma.If i drink from a smokers cup will i go home throwing up the next day?Or eat from their items?

One day i went 2 my friends house and i noticed her mom smokes.I ate at their house.Then i came home the next day throwing up at 3:00 in the morning about 8 times,everything i ate.I went 2 the doctors and they said it was a stomach virus.So i went back 2 her house and ate there.It happened again.So i think my asthma has something 2 do with her mom smoking.Now when i go over her house i don't eat from there cause i'm afriad i might thrown up again.But he thing is i'm scraed that i might a disease maybe.And i can never eat from a smoker's house again.

asthma has nothing to do with eating or drinking. if the mom is smoking around you then you might have a problem, however you should know that asthma is a chronic condition characterized by some degree of inflammation that's present in the air passages of the lungs of a person with asthma. i think your becoming ill may have more to do with the cleanliness of the place. you dont have to worry about sharing anything with a smoker (except of course if you share a cigarette haha)

There are two basic types of coffee beans offered by wholesale coffee distributors, namely Arabica and Robusta. The two types of coffee are grown everywhere in the world, but true lovers of coffee tend to prefer Arabica beans to Robusta. Arabica beans produce a richly flavored coffee as well as the thickness which is the hallmark of a gourmet coffee. The finest coffees are usually grown at high altitudes in the tropics (the gourmet coffee plant needs cold but cannot tolerate frost), and Arabica coffee lends itself to high altitude conditions. On the other hand, Arabica beans are more difficult to grow, being more susceptible to diseases and producing smaller crops than Robusta, and therefore it is more expensive to produce than Robusta. Robusta coffee does not have as rich a flavor and thickness as Arabica coffee, but the Robusta plant is hardier and disease-resistant. Many companies mix the two types together to create their blends.

To produce the best coffee, the roasted beans from the wholesale coffee distributor must be ground properly. To preserve freshness, the grinding should not be done until the coffee is ready to be brewed. There are two principal types of coffee grinders on the market, namely blade grinders and burr grinders. Blade grinders come with a propeller like blade, and do not have special settings, hence does not grind the coffee uniformly. If you want a finer grind you have to grind your coffee for a considerably longer time period. Medium coarse grind is used in French press and other coffee makers which have stainless steel or gold filters. Medium grind is used by drip coffee makers. Fine grind is used in espresso machines. Extra fine grind is used in old-style espresso machines and in vacuum pots.

There are three main ways of serving coffee by the pound: café, espresso and latte. A latte is a mixture of espresso with steamed milk. Cappuccino, for example, usually is made of espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk. Café Breva is cappuccino made with half and half rather than whole milk. Frappe is made with ice cream rather than milk. Mocha is a type of latte or cappuccino which has chocolate syrup mixed in. Caffe Americano is made of one shot of espresso and six ounces or more of hot water. Espresso con Panna has whipped cream mixed in. Ristretto is an intensely-flavored type of espresso made by forcing less water than usual through the ground coffee. In Lungo, on the contrary, twice as much water as usual is forced through the ground coffee.

There is a place inside to put coffee grounds usually removable. You can add more grounds for stronger coffee or less for a weaker cup. There is a water line to fill with water. replace grounds container and top. Place on stove to percolate. when done enjoy coffee. Simple and delicious.

where can I find heat defuser plate for coffee pot?

Five years ago I bought a brass/copper round,thin plate to put under the carafe of an automatic coffee maker. It keeps the coffee from over cooking while it sits on the coffee makers warming plate. It works great and I want to buy some for friends; I cannot remember where I bought it and have tried every kind of store and on the web without success. Anyone know where I could find this?

have u tried sur la table or jb prince in new york (jbprince.com). my mom use to do the same thing, but i believe she brought hers in chinatown (San Francisco). she also used it on her gas stove to keep a pot of rice warm and to keep it from burning.
